BOOSTING THE OLD HIGH SCHOOL

Verse 1
Faithful and truehearted, Let us cheer our dear "Old High,"
We revere her and defend her, And her colors proudly fly;
We will stand for her, united, Of her deeds we gladly tell,
Her colors streaming, Glad faces beaming,
So here's a cheer for her that we all love so well.

CHORUS
Joyus and ever loyal, Let us boost for our "Old High,"
Let ev'ry heart sing, Let ev'ry voice ring,
There's no time to grieve or sign;
Onward, our course pursuing, May defeat ne'er our ardor cool,
But united, We will boost for her, our Old High School.

Verse 2
Honors she has taken, On the track and with the ball,
May she always rank the highest, May her colors never fall;
There's no other that can match her, When her team is on the field,
Her boys the fleetest, Her girls the sweetest,
Then here's a cheer for her, for her who ne'er will yield.

The following contributed by Dorothy (Lynde, '56) Grove
I have a copy of the sheet music of our traditional Knob Noster High School school song (I got it from my mother, Georgia Margaret Cronhardt Lynde, a 1930 KNHS graduate). I don't remember singing the second verse much, if at all. I know that Leeton High School (where my father, Malvern Lynde, graduated) had the SAME school song. Evidently, it was written as a generic, one-size-fits-all school song (which would explain the absence of specifics such as the school name, colors, mascot, etc. The name of the song as printed on the music is: BOOSTING THE OLD HIGH SCHOOL (Words by Ward Wilkes, Music by Vincent Engledinger) Copyright MCMXIV (1914 if my memory serves me correctly) by The J. A. Parks Co.

Fight Song Version A (pre-1983 or 1984)

We're the kids from Knob, you won't forget.
We've got the spirit, and we've got the pep.
You wait and watch and see.
The team from '69 never gives in
so fight to the finish boys we're out to win.
Hey hey hey

(substitute your year , of course)

Fight Song Version B (post-1984)

Oh we're the mighty Panthers, You won't forget.
We've got the spirit, And we've got the pep (the pep you won't forget).
So keep our colors flying, We won't give in.
We'll fight to the finish team (or substitute boys, girls, or Knob for "team").
So GO, FIGHT, WIN!

Why the Difference?

According to Jesse Sahlfeld (85) the KNHS music teacher at the time named Suzie Nichols, rewrote part of the lyrics of the fight song to make them a bit more updated. Polly Deitrick (Bryant, 84) agrees with Jesse and says that "I was in Suzy Nichols' Honors Choir class in 1983-84, and I distinctly remember her rewriting the words to the fight song. She, in fact, taught us the new lyrics in Honors Choir."

A survey we conducted tends to back this up as well. Most of those who remember version B graduated after 1985 while most of those that remember version A graduated before 1985.
